the channels, here in milan called navigli, shape the townscape of the southwest of the city. naviglio grande, a 50km long channel from lagio maggiore to the heart of the town, was formerly used to transport the marble for the dome of milan. today mainly tourists are navigated through the narrow waterstreet.
