1911 - light saw

today i captured the best photograph so far. on my way to work with the mountain bike i drove along a track that leads to a small t-crossroad in the middle of nowhere. heavy fog narrowed the sight distance to not more than 30 metres. the air was cold, humid and fresh and dew lay on meadows and fields.

just when i headed for the crossroad the fog tore partly open and let a few sun beams pass through the grey curtain. this circumstance made for a three-dimensional stagger of the background and additionally the foreground was gleaming what was due to the illuminated dew. so only fore- and background would have been a great scenery for a dramatic photo but, believe it or not, things got even better: suddenly a throng of round about fifty chattering geese appeared with a farmer in tow. the farmer seemed to herd them onto a new meadow. the whole scenery was completely surreal and i really thought that i'm in the wrong film.

today i captured the best photograph so far, but i captured it only in my mind. i arrived a few seconds too late, so that the animals and the farmer had already passed the perfect spot for a great, candid picture. only a few minutes later all the magic was over and the sun prevailed, at least temporarily. fortunately i decided to stop my bike in the forest some minutes after i'd met the farmer and, anyhow, i took an also nice, if not necessarily extraordinary image.

1611 - burning bum syndrome

since i hanged up my active football career in may, cycling has come into my focus more and more. my bum isn't accustomed to the daily rides yet, so many a time it gets me back for stressing it permanently.

nevertheless currently there is nothing better and relieving for me than riding a bike in the cold mornings or evenings and a hot shower afterwards.

1511 - cascade

if you concentrate on seeing natural patterns in your daily environment, you should surely catch sight of many of them.

they might not always make a good subject for photography if you'd image them in their overall context. but if you handle detaching them from their surrounding and highlighting the peculiarity of your composition, the results will satisfy you very probably. additionally you can try to mix overall patterns with small ones - i especially like this feature in today's photograph of the green, straightly triangle-shaped hedge in association with the wonderfully coloured, patterned leave mass.

1411 - slipstream

today my mate andi and i picked up pace and used the prime late autumn weather for a bike ride in the setting sun after work. everything was bathed in an orange, warm light, what hid the fact that the temperatures had almost reached the freezing mark when we arrived home (not before darkness had almost completely approached) at 6pm after two hours of cycling.

it felt like we were supported by a permanent tailwind that escorted us on our way through the woods and fields. in fact this tailwind was the energising sun that refreshed our batteries and made us riding in the slipstream of euphoria.

1311 - still upright

the lights are often harsh in november and the temperatures decrease constantly, all the contrasts get harder. the falling and especially the already fallen leaves give a premonition of the coming winter.

only a few leaves are still solidly attached to their mother plants. mainly the small plants that have enjoyed the protective shield of the conifer wood treetop all year still resist successfully against the ordinary course of things. from their points of view they appear not that small as they really are what might empower their war of resistance again. but in not too distant future they, for sure, will shed their last bright, yellow leaves, too.

2910 - relationship

have i ever told you that i really go for trees? i think so.

trees and humans share many things - both grow up in a couple of years, appear luscious in youth but develop their whole beauty not before middle age. there are different shapes, colours, sizes and origins of both of them. and both the trees and the humans wish for the sun and the warmth and suffer from darkness and cold.

only the mix of all of them (and us) makes for the pure beauty of our world. and i love how trees like the big one of my today's photograph set us humans in relations to unshakeable things on this planet.

2810 - first flakes

besides reading lecture notes and solving different messy problems i haven't done much more this weekend. so the sunday afternoon walk was my solely aim for today.

funnily the first proper snow fell last night and didn't thaw, so the walk was supposed to be a specific pleasure for kingston, the dog. he really likes mud and water, but he definitely loves snow.

although my today's photograph doesn't picture an animal-human-couple of strangers but my wonderful girl and kingston, the great dog of our neighbours, i want to dedicate the daily posting to a project to which this image would actually match quite good.

a special category of pablo heimplatz' blog that is called at eye level covers the topic of the special relationship between dog and owner. i'm really into his project and absolutely recommend following him.

2710 - plumed visit

tina and i take care of animals in the same way like we respect humans.

this fact finds expression for example in our direct environment: besides our own cat we sometimes look after the kitties and dogs that live in our yard, too. additionally to that tina donates a little sum to an animal welfare organisation.

i for one try to help all the beings in my direct surrounding. for that reason i started to feed the birds in our yard since a few days again. corresponding the first spit of snow fell today and the first soil frost is said to appear in the coming night. i'm pretty sure that the eurasian nuthatch of my today's pic is very pleased with the delicious seeds that we usually serve.

on bad weather days like today the observation of approach and departure of the beautiful european birds is more amusing than watching a movie in the home cinema and a welcome variation to my learning periods.

1810 - anticyclic acting

anticyclic acting is a way to escape from the daily routine.

after i hadn't managed to be the first on the roads yesterday, my today's alarm rang already at half past six in the morning. with an eye to the great weather forecast for today and hopefully a great sunrise at the lakeside i ate my breakfast in less than 15 minutes and left home still in complete darkness. equipped with my ultra bright led headlamp and red blinking lights on the back pack i started my journey into the dark.

having the knowledge of being the sole human in a dark forest and withal riding a bicycle with a visibility range of not more than 20 metres is a very special experience. i spotted the sparkling, sometimes white, sometimes yellow incandescent eyes of the forest animals a few times through the undergrowth of the woods. at last i felt like a real man again.

getting up early paid off today.

1710 - early bird

the days of enjoyable temperatures in the morning are mostly gone now. all the better that the forecasts for the weekend predict late summer conditions. so i could be really happy about that but unfortunately i will spend these days in barcelona and not at home. hopefully we will get a piece of the cake there, too.

today i used the announcing prime weather to go to work by bike again. i actually thought that i'd be one of the first who is on the go in the fields in the morning but i was surprised by the fruit farmers again: in simply every plantation the farmers and their temporary workers were already occupied with the harvest of the big, red and ripe apples.

i really appreciate the possibility to buy fresh and organic food at the local dealers. support your local dealer is a good credo.
